“Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime; give a man religion and he will die praying for a fish.”

Three men are walking through the woods, when the first comments on how smooth the ground is, and how nice it is to walk on. The second one tells him that his grandfather told him stories about how aliens came along in ancient times and they’re spaceships made the ground flatter. The third one than calls him foolish, saying that his own father told him stories of thousands of intelligent rabbits who went to work making the path smooth.
The first man chuckles at the other two’s stories.
“Why are you laughing?” says the second one. “What’s YOUR reason for why this trail is smooth?” The first one admitted that he didn’t know, but enjoyed it nonetheless. “Well, if you don’t know, then my story must be right!” exclaims the third traveler. “No, MY story must be right, because it was told by my grandfather, who was here much longer before your father!” says the second. “Are you joking? There are obviously rabbits in the world, so MINE must be right!” replies the third.
The first traveler walks ahead to avoid their arguing and just enjoy the trail, while the other two get so angered at eachother that they end up killing eachother over who’s story is right. .
The End.

A few days ago I was debating with a Christian friend of mine, and he made the claim that atheists “don’t get as much out of life as Christians do.” Of course that was a grossly biased statement, but I decided to reply to it with this
Back when I was younger and still believed in Santa, Christmas became more about getting the reward from the man who supposedly knew whether I was “naughty or nice”. During the few weeks prior to Christmas, I would be exceptionally nice to others, not because I wanted to, but because I wanted Santa to see that I deserved something good. Yet as time passed and I grew out of that childish fantasy, Christmas turned more into a time for enjoying family and those dear to me, rather than snagging rewards from that magical man.
So no, I told him, Christians do not get “more” out of life than atheists do. If anything, atheists enjoy it far more, because we accept that it’s the only one we have, and we’d rather use it to it’s best, rather than try to reap rewards from a character from bronze-age mythology. How could you possibly enjoy life if you spend it preparing for when it’s over?

Prayer is nothing more than wishful thinking.
I wanted an A on my last paper, and I got it. Had I had a four leaf clover in my pocket while that happened, I would have been able to make a case for four leaf clovers bringing good luck.
Plenty of great things in my life have happened, and if a four leaf clover had been in my pocket my whole life, I could have just said all the good things that happened where from the four leaf clover, and for all the bad things, I could have just said:
“Oh, well, it doesn’t ALWAYS help me”.
All hail the four leaf clover.

“Inherent to a religion is that they need children. Children are open for ideas of people they trust. They trust without question. So they are the best targets for indoctrination of a religion.”

“But on a serious note, science is just human knowledge of the world, plain and simple.
We lose knowledge, what’s left of our humanity? What diseases can we conquer? How can we make life better? What obstacles can we overcome? The problem with religion is that it makes ignorance (a.k.a. blind faith) a virtue.
Why spread ignorance when you can understand the universe and understand life?”

“Imagine for a moment that you live in a world where nine out of ten people believe that the world was made and is run by magical unicorns, and that unless you somehow appease these unicorns you’re a bad person who the unicorns will punish.
Imagine that in this world people will slaughter each other, start full scale wars and genocides, just to appease this unicorns.
Homosexuals are bashed, science is denied, politics are twisted, art is censored, schools are corrupted, just to appease these unicorns.
Now, imagine you’re one of the few that understand unicorns are imaginary, and are utterly despised for that.
You’d be pissed off too”

“The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one”
